Marble House, Toorak

Lines of sunlight hit crystals in the blue-veined marble treads and turn polished plaster walls pearlescent

Located in one of Melbourne’s most desirable suburbs, Marble House celebrates grandeur in its volume and form, capitalising on its generous neighbourhood views.

Originally a 40-year-old duplex, the family home now stands with a stone façade incorporating the ultra-slim profile Reynaers SlimPatio 68 sliding system, projecting an unwavering character of strength, clarity and warmth.

There is an undeniable sense of rhythm felt whilst moving through the house. The considered interior layout, coupled with the natural colour palette, leads the eye inwards and then outwards through invisible iaSlim channel frame glazing, past the infinity edge swimming pool and towards the city views.

Crafted by Lauren Tarrant Design in collaboration with Conrad Architects, the home is a great entertainer, and “it’s really special to have people over, but it’s also wonderful as a family home” says owner Lauren Tarrant. The home has a two storey fall across the site, allowing for four levels in total. This gave the architect the opportunity to use the staircase as a main feature, which also functions as a lightwell, drawing natural light from the skylight above across all four levels.

The dining area enjoys uninterrupted access to the outdoor living spaces through ultra-slim Reynaers Hi-Finity Zero Threshold Profile sliding doors, creating a large, light-filled wall of glass with a sleek, elegant appearance.

Access to the pool deck is via an iaSlim Pivot door that turns effortlessly through its axis opening out to extraordinary city views.

Daylight is an integral, playful component of the interior, adding contrasts and richness to the spaces. It works together with the pared-back natural colours and material palette, adding a layer of expression and character to the space, which changes depending on the time of day.

Both Tarrant and Conrad concertedly applied the flip of the conventional residential plan with the lift of further living space and study to level four and the drop of all bedrooms below street level. The base floor, level with the ground at site rear, features a gymnasium with steam room and the essential wine cellar.

What sets Marble House apart is its use of stone, light and transparency throughout the entirety of the home. Feature marble is utilised in the façade and throughout the interior. Lines of sunlight hit crystals in the blue-veined marble treads and turn polished plaster walls pearlescent. The effect is dazzling without resorting to decoration and elicits smiles of delight. The home feels bright, solid, grand, timeless and has stature, settling into its Toorak location with ease.
